What’s In Your Large Intestine or Colon?
March 22nd, 2012 by admin
The large intestine, or colon, has no digestive function but it does absorb large amounts of water and electrolytes from the undigested food passing through it from the small intestine.
The colon consists of four main parts, which are the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colons. Strong peristaltic movements, or rhythmic contractions, move the dehydrated contents, the feces, through the colon, towards the rectum.
The colon, normally requires between 18-24 hours for material to pass through the large intestine to the anus for expulsion. This is in marked contrast with the 3-5 hours required for the movement of chyme, the semi-fluid, thick mass that is the by-product of the partially digested food that enters the small intestine from the stomach.
While in the colon, the chyme is converted into feces.
The colon absorbs water and salts, provides for the secretion of mucous and provides the environment needed or the extensive action of microorganisms that are involved in the formation of feces. The colon stores the feces until they are eliminated through a process called by the defecation.
Numerous microorganisms inhabit the colon. They reproduce rapidly and ultimately constitute about 30% of the dry weight of the feces.
Some bacteria in the intestine synthesize vitamin K along with other vitamins, which are then absorbed into the blood stream through the walls of the colon.
Roughly every 8 to12 hours, large parts of the colon undergo several strong contractions called mass movements, which propel the feces a considerable distance towards the anus.
Each mass movement contraction pushes the feces approximately 8 inches through the colon. These mass movements are very common following some meals, especially after breakfast.
Scientific studies have concluded that many fatal diseases start in the colon.
Further research on corpses shows that, upon surgical examination, most are blocked, up to 80 percent, with toxic waste substances that are compacted in their colons. As if that were not bad enough, studies show that people in western cultures who are thirty years of age or older, have approximately15 pounds of hard compacted fecal matter in their colons.
The colon produces mucous that protects its walls from absorbing toxins that are in the feces and also helps the movement of the feces through the colon by “greasing” it, so that it slides along more easily.
When the colon is bombarded by a lot of toxins, it doesn’t have the time to flush the mucous as it normally would and adds more to block the next wave of toxins. These repeated layers of mucous attract feces and allow parts to become embedded in the walls of the colon.
This can lead to constriction of the passage of the waste through your colon, and will eventually result in serious illness.
On average, most people will experience one to two effortless bowel movements per day. If you don’t follow this pattern and your bowel movement requires a lot of effort, or you have to wait for over 5 minutes for the movement, you are considered constipated.
If you are only able to have a bowel movement every two or three days , or worse, once a week, you are really constipated and need to seek help as soon as you can. It is important that you figure out the cause of your constipation because there are a lot of formulas and medications that simply mask the problem, which will only make the condition worse over time.
The following are some suggestions for getting rid of constipation and improving the overall health of your colon.
Avoid the consumption of processed foods, foods with preservatives, carbonated beverages and foods that are high in fat content. All of these produce toxins that can cause the colon to work harder than it should which can lead to constipation.
It is really important to drink enough water to keep the colon functioning properly.
As a general rule, you should drink at least eight, eight ounce glasses of water per day.
Once the colon starts laying mucous on top of mucous, the debris that clings to it starts to get thicker and thicker.
The inner layers dry out and they become impacted along the wall of the colon.
Try to think of it like the cholesterol that builds up in the arteries of those who are suffering from atherosclerosis.
The same thing happens in your colon.
The waste builds up along the walls of the colon until it starts to obstruct the flow of the feces through the colon.
If waste stays in your colon for days it will start to decay. This plaque becomes toxic and poisonous and the gases that seep out from it to the blood, will then poison all the organs and tissues that it comes in contact with.
Sometimes, being lethargic has nothing to do with not having sufficient rest.
If your colon is filled with waste materials, you can get that same lethargic feeling. It is simply undisputed that, barring any structural disorder in your body, a colon cleanse will restore your colon’s proper function and put you on the right track towards a more healthy and energetic life.
